The theme this time is that all these songs were performed by
Ranald and Iain[1] at the Beaufort Hotel last night. Which is,
of course, no help at all to anyone who wasn't there, although
it narrows it down to 1) folk or borderline-folk, and 2)
mainly less than cheerful[2].
1) Don't you know that we're married, see I'm wearin' his
ring?
2) But all I've ever learned from love was how to shoot
somebody who outdrew ya.
3) We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs, then we started
all over again.
4) He shut out the future, he shut out the past, and even the
present was running out fast.
5) All the lasses were crying and tearing their hair.
6) His dog up and died.
[1] http://www.nessmp3.com/music/bands/165/
[2] Some may well say that 1) implies 2) anyway...

Actually... That's what Iain and Ranald said, but while I was
double checking the lyrics online, I discovered that line
*isn't* in Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"[1]. According to
Google the version which *does* have it is fairly consistantly
attributed to Jeff Buckley.
Cohen' version:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/leonardcohen/hallelujah.html
Buckley's version:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jeffbuckley/hallelujah.html
[1]The third and fourth verses are completely different, in
fact, and there isn't a fifth one, which is where the line
comes from. I've checked my Mum's copy of "Various Positions",
and this is true.

It's the live version that can be found on "Cohen Live" (1994) and "More
best of" (1997). It's the most popular version and has slightly more
interesting lyrics than the original studio version (it's the one Buckley
used):

That's actually a *third* version, halfway between the other
two, though.

It's a Leonard Cohen song. In fact it's his best song. Though Tim
Buckley's version is the best I've heard.

It's his best song.
In my opinion by a considerable margin in that he's written several fine
lyrics, but Halleluiah is the only truly great tune he's written.

I've been hearing this a lot lately, and I'm afraid it just strikes me as
an appalling dirge. Sorry, can't see the appeal at all.

My former husband loves the song, but I don't. There's one line that grates
on my nerves: "but you don't really care for music, do you?"
I like Cohen's "In My Secret Life" much better. It was on The L-Word during
a part of the show that particularly resonated with me.[1]

You need to have listened to a few Leonard Cohen songs.
Hallelujah will then strike you as possibly one of the *least*

Here is my obligatory comment on 'Tower of Song':
Funny
Not that bleak
Listen to it
Commit it to memory.

It is. Nice album, but I must say it had to grow on me rather and it
still sounds a bit monotonous at times. In My Secret Life is probably
the best song from it.

Nah. That's the usual quip about him, but it's not true at all, IYAM.
It's more "Music Not to Commit Suicide By, After All". Music for
committing suicide... I don't know. Perhaps death metal? And then
there's James Blunt and Marco Borsate, who make music to commit suicide
over.

That's what my Mum always says. You're depressed, you listen
to Cohen, you realise that, by comparision, you aren't
depressed at all...

I beg to differ. James Blunt creates music to murder by. At least that's
the effect it has on me. I get an overwhelming urge to grab him by the
throat and quietly point out that whilst the occasional vocal mannerism
can help make a song more interesting, it should be less than 100% of the
time, and that failure to immediately learn this simple fact should have
instantly terminal consequences.
I'll accept that he has quite a good singling voice. However it should be
used for singing, and it should be singing songs and not pointless dirges.

It illustrates that moment in 'Shrek' quite well, but I wouldn't like
to hear it over and over again.
Oh, and it's an annoyingly strong earworm too. In fact, I think I may
have to go and get rid of it with some Snoop Dogg right now...

If anyone who agrees with Eric (and me) didn't hear this
week's "Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music" (including Eric),
they should go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/crimesagainstmusic/pip/hktc8/
immediately...

Eric, you're beautiful, It's true. And maybe you and James Blunt will
share a moment that will last 'till the end.
But remember this about angels with smiles on their faces: you only get one.

Oh yes, that's the other thing. Many people have written cliched songs,
but very few have managed to create entire albums that consist of nothing
but cliches.
I classify him, along with Bryan Adams, as making music for people who
don't actually like music very much.

You have a point. _Someone_ should die, anyway.

I would not recommend that you listen to Borsato, then.
